20 toilets at Ruiru Girls school collapse as schools resumes

As schools prepare to reopen on Monday, Ruiru Girls’ Secondary School in Kiambu County faces a daunting challenge following the collapse and sinking of 20 toilets due to heavy rains in the past week. The school, which serves as the sole public girls’ boarding school in Ruiru constituency, accommodates 1,031 students, the majority of whom are boarders.

Principal Gloria Waithera disclosed during a tree planting event at the school that only 16 out of the 36 pit toilets have survived the recent torrential rainfall. She expressed concern over the limited lavatory facilities available for the large student population, urging the government and well-wishers to assist in rebuilding the facilities to ensure a conducive learning environment for the girls.

Waithera also highlighted the impact of the heavy rains on school infrastructure, noting that some classrooms were flooded, resulting in damage to equipment. She appealed for support from both the government and corporate entities in the area to address the challenges faced by the school.

Area MP Simon King’ara, who participated in the tree planting exercise, pledged to provide temporary toilets while the NG-CDF allocates funds for the construction of permanent ones. He also revealed plans to relocate displaced residents currently sheltered in three primary school grounds to alternative areas to make room for learners as they return to classes.

Highlighting the widespread waterlogging in Ruiru, King’ara acknowledged that the reconstruction process may face delays. He emphasized the importance of tree planting initiatives, echoing President William Ruto’s goal of planting 15 billion trees in five years. King’ara thanked NCBA Bank for donating seedlings and urged other businesses to contribute to the cause.
