Adjust KCSE Exam, Academic Calendar Due to Prolonged Reopening; KNUT Demands Ministry of Education
|KCSE Exam Dates and Academic Calendar Adjustment. Collins Oyuu, the chairman of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), has stressed the importance of the Ministry of Education reevaluating the academic calendar and potentially rescheduling the KCSE exams.
Oyuu noted that the ministry will likely need to reassess the dates for the KCSE exams and make adjustments to the academic calendar accordingly. However, as of now, the ministry has not issued any directives regarding a revised calendar.
He speculated that the ministry might consider compensating for the lost time within the current year, suggesting that the KCSE exams could potentially be conducted later than usual, possibly extending into December.
This year’s Form Four candidates have faced significant disruptions to their academic journey, experiencing a roller coaster of uncertainties. The recent closure of schools, similar to the shutdown during the KCPE exams, adds to their challenges.
The prolonged closure of schools in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, lasting eight months from March to November, led to candidates taking their exams in 2021. Education experts anticipate delays in the examination schedule this year as well.
President William Ruto’s recent announcement of the indefinite closure of schools has raised concerns about the ramifications of this shutdown. With schools once again grappling with uncertainty four years after the initial disruption caused by Covid-19, the situation remains uncertain.
Silas Obuhatsa, Chairman of the National Parents Association (NPA), emphasized the importance of timely updates from the government regarding school reopenings and any adjustments to the academic calendar.
