The government has announced that about 26,000 teachers employed on contracts in Junior Secondary Schools in 2023 will be given permanent and pensionable terms starting July 1. This confirmation brings relief to many teachers who had raised concerns about their wages, which some claimed were insufficient to support their livelihoods.

Previously, JSS interns earned Sh20,000 monthly, while those in lower primary schools received Sh15,000. Intern teachers were not entitled to any allowances or health insurance schemes.

With their protests now over two weeks, there is interest in how much these teachers will earn on permanent and pensionable terms. Most JSS interns hold degrees or diplomas. Once confirmed, they will start at job group C2, equivalent to a senior teacher at the primary school level.

The salary for job group C2 ranges from Sh34,955 to a maximum of Sh43,694. A new teacher will start at Sh34,955, with automatic salary increases every three years.

– Teachers in minor municipalities receive Sh9,600.

– Teachers in other areas receive Sh7,500.

Additionally, teachers are entitled to a Sh6,000 annual leave allowance, paid once, and a Sh4,000 commuter allowance. Those working in hardship areas receive a hardship allowance of Sh10,900.

Moreover, teachers will benefit from the health insurance scheme provided by their employer.
