Educational Background and Early Career
Priscilla’s academic journey began at St. Anne’s Kisoko High School in Nambale Sub-County. She then pursued a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from the University of Nairobi, marking the formal start of her teaching career. Her talents as an administrator were quickly recognized, and in September 1973, she was appointed Deputy Head Mistress of Butere Girls High School in the then Western Province.
Leadership at Bunyore and Lugulu Girls High Schools
In January 1974, Priscilla Were took on the role of head of Bunyore Girls High School, where she served until April 1992. Her leadership was instrumental in the school’s development and reputation. She then moved to Lugulu Girls High in May 1992, where she served as Principal for 12 years and eight months until her retirement in December 2004. Under her tenure, Lugulu Girls High School was noted for its discipline, time management, and academic excellence.
Legacy and Later Career
Following her retirement from active school administration, Priscilla continued to contribute to the education sector by serving as a Commissioner with the Teachers Service Commission. Her dedication to education and strong leadership principles were remembered fondly by many.

Bunyore Girls High School History
Priscilla Were’s tenure at Bunyore Girls is part of the school’s rich history. Established in 1905 by the Cramers Missionaries from South Africa as a commercial training center, the school initially focused on Religion, Arithmetic, English, Vernacular, and Needlework.
By 1944, it had evolved into a primary and intermediate school. The boys initially part of the school were later relocated to Kima Primary School in 1952.
Notable Alumni
The school boasts notable alumni, including Alice Amwomo Wako, the mother of former Busia senator and attorney-general Amos Wako. Alice fell in love with teaching at Bunyore Girls and later taught there alongside her husband, Daniel Wako.
