The government through the Ministry of Education has urged private school owners to reduce the tuition Fees paid by learners even as schools near opening.
The Education Cabinet Secretary, Ezekiel Machogu said that private schools are more expensive and therefore a need for them to lower the tuition fees to allow more students to acquire quality education.
The CS highlighted that the lower primary schools in private schools charge tuition fees ranging between Ksh. 15,000-Sh. 30,000, middle schools charge between Ksh. 30,000- Ksh.100,000 while those in upper charge above Ksh. 100,000.
Learners who attend to the aforementioned schools are entitled to quality services including education, foreign languages and co-curricular activities like chess, swimming, among other sports.
Machogu gave an accolade to the private schools saying they are good partners aiming at providing learners in Kenya with quality education.
The CS further said that by collaboration, encouraging open debate and coming up with new solutions can bring about sustainable and inclusive educational environment.
The CS has encouraged private school owners to cooperate with the government in a bid to reduce operation costs with an aim of making quality education accessible for all. This message was made public through the Coastal Regional Education Director on behalf of the Education Cabinet Secretary.
Mr. Charles Ichome who is the Chairman of the Kenya Private Schools Association said the they will work with the government to improve the quality of Education.

“We charge our fees as per the operational costs. If the state can reduce the operational costs, it will automatically lower school fees,” he said.
The CS praised private schools for offering high quality education to Kenyan learners while at the Kenya Private Schools Association (KPSA) AGM on Friday.
The CS went ahead to say that private schools have greatly contributed to the growth of the education sector. He acknowledged the importance this schools have brought in bridging the gap and solving issues related to efficiency, quality, relevance and equity.
The CS further said they have worked closely with private schools in a bid to ensure the 100% transition has been achieved from primary to secondary schools.
The said said that this year’s theme is resonating well with the Ministry of Education which is, “Re-evaluating future private schools amid education reforms”.
He said the government is committed to creating the atmosphere where the public and private schools can thrive. They will also ensure that all operations affect the private schools, they are involved.
He also promised them that the government will take their input into account whenever they are making critical decision in the ministry.
The CS said that the government had included them as members in implementing the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) which is now at Junior Secondary grade 8.
He also said that the private entities made critical decision during the COVID-19 Pandemic which gave a greenlight on how to proceed with school programs amid the pandemic.
The CS echoed that private schools play a vital role in towards providing a better tomorrow for the learners.
The private association stated that their operation costs are high something that necessitates them to impose higher fees on parents.
