Education CS Issues Way Forward on Learning Should Floods Persist. On Friday, May 3, President William Ruto announced that further directives would be issued by the government regarding the continuation of learning in light of ongoing heavy rains and floods.

Ruto stated that he had instructed Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu on the matter, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring learning continuity despite the postponement of school reopening.

This announcement came after inquiries about the possibility of adopting eLearning during the extended school closure. According to Ruto’s directive, Machogu will provide additional guidelines after the following week.

Ruto clarified that all schools scheduled to reopen the next week would remain closed, and the Ministry of Education is prepared to work with teachers to ensure operational continuity should flooding persist beyond the following week. Specific details and instructions will be provided by the government after this period.

Previously, Machogu had issued a circular suggesting the integration of learning centers and classes as a mitigation measure to prevent disruptions caused by floods. He instructed field education officers to devise strategies such as resource sharing among neighboring schools and the implementation of multi-grade and multi-shift education models where applicable.

Ruto’s decision to indefinitely postpone the reopening of the second term was prompted by the severe weather conditions, which have led to flooding in various parts of the country and the destruction of school infrastructure.
