Education CS Issues Way Forward On University Funding

Education CS Julius Migos strongly defended the new university funding model saying it is the way to go in addressing the financing needs of students from various backgrounds.

Speaking during the International Confederation of Principals on Tuesday in Mombasa County, the CS noted that the new model is tailored to address needs of students with various financial capacities.

Migos further noted that the Ministry had taken notes of the concerns and vowed to solve the issues in the next few weeks.

“The funding model has been in existence for 29 years, the only thing that has changed is that the needs of testing instruments was adjusted and reviewed to ensure that those children who need the government support benefit most from the government funds,” he explained.

The new university model was unveiled by President William Ruto to ensure university students receive funding in proportion with their needs.

The new fund has five bands categorised according to financial capacity of students’ families.

The CS further revealed that the bands were created “so that children of those who can afford can bear rightful share of the school burden.”

He further added that as a ministry, his team created a portal to facilitate re-banding of students.

“We have created a portal where we have allowed the students to appeal so that if you have data or information to show that you have been put in the wrong band, your issue can be rectified,” he affirmed.

“We are working every single minute to re-band you.”

The CS noted the government’s policy is to have 100 percent transition for every learner.

“Going forward, I can assure that within the next few weeks, we are going to resolve that matter and each and every child who deserves to be in school will be because we are doing 100 percent transition,” he asserted.

His assurance came as various leaders, such as Narok Senator Ledama Olekina, termed the new model as confusing saying it creates unfair classes of students.
