Government to delay reopening of schools affected by floods.

In various parts of the country, heavy rains and flooding have disrupted the normal functioning of schools, leading to delays in their reopening. The National and County Multi-Agency teams are working diligently to address this issue by overseeing repairs to ensure a safe learning environment for students.

Raymond Omollo, the Interior Principal Secretary, emphasized the government’s commitment to monitoring the flood situation and facilitating the safe movement of learners, parents, and teachers as schools prepare to resume for the second term. The National Flood Emergency Response Command Center will provide regular updates on areas prone to flooding, helping to mitigate risks for schoolchildren.

Despite the challenges posed by the adverse weather conditions, schools are scheduled to reopen on Monday, May 13. The impact of the heavy rains and flooding extends beyond the education sector, with tens of thousands of households displaced and numerous health facilities and agricultural lands affected.

To address these challenges, security measures have been heightened at bus termini and other strategic locations to ensure the safe movement of vehicles and individuals, particularly schoolchildren. Traffic police officers are also deployed along critical highways to enforce regulations and prevent accidents.

Furthermore, strict measures are in place to prevent vehicles from accessing unsafe bridges and roads. The Security and Intelligence Committees are actively monitoring fragile ecosystems like rivers and dams to safeguard communities and infrastructure. Omollo urged parents to collaborate with multi-agency teams and school leadership to ensure the safety of children during their commute to and from school.

Local authorities, including chiefs and assistant chiefs, are tasked with sensitizing communities about hazardous areas and preventing risky activities like children swimming in flooded zones.

Public cooperation is crucial in heeding government advisories, including weather forecasts, safe reopening guidelines from the Ministry of Education, health advisories, and notices regarding transportation conditions. The government remains committed to supporting affected communities and restoring normalcy in flood-affected areas.
