Government to Extend School Opening Dates
|Government to Extend School Opening Dates. The national government announced on Friday, April 26, that decisions regarding the extension of school opening dates would be made on a case-by-case basis, particularly in areas affected by floods.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua explained during a press briefing on the ongoing floods in Karen that the Ministry of Education would collaborate with county governments to assess the situation before advising parents and students on any changes to the school calendar.
Gachagua emphasized that students whose schools have not been affected by the rains should still report to school as scheduled by the government.
He stated, “On a case-by-case basis, it will be analyzed on its own merit. Where there is a need to extend the opening day, we can do that. Otherwise, for the purpose of the country, the school will open as planned.”

Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang revealed that the Ministry had already begun assessing the situation in Nairobi County. He mentioned that 64 schools in Nairobi county would likely have their opening dates rescheduled due to damage to classrooms and washrooms caused by the floods.
However, Kipsang clarified that the opening dates would remain unchanged for schools unaffected by the floods. He explained, “In Nairobi County, we have 64 schools which are substantially affected in terms of classes and washrooms. In Nairobi, we decided to deal with them as local issues so that we cannot ask all schools not to open.”
Regarding infrastructure damaged by the floods, such as roads and bridges used by school buses and students, the Ministry of Transport has been tasked with rebuilding these key facilities to ensure safe transportation for students. Government to Extend School Opening Dates
