The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has introduced 40 subjects proposed for Grade 10.
Grade 10 will be the first class in Senior Secondary School (SSS), which will consist of three grades. The inaugural Grade 10 class will commence in 2026.
According to the curriculum design, 40 subjects will be available to Grade 10 students, but they will need to select seven.
Transitioning from the 8-4-4 curriculum to the CBC curriculum, students will choose subjects based on their intended career paths as they prepare for university.
Four subjects will be mandatory for all students: English, Kiswahili, Community Service Learning, and Physical Education (PE).
“At this level, learners shall take seven learning areas (LAs) as recommended by the Presidential Working Party on Educational Reforms (PWPER). These shall comprise four compulsory learning areas and three learning areas opted for by the learner according to their chosen Pathway,” stated the curriculum design.
Under the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) category, 17 subjects will be offered.
STEM subjects include Mathematics Advanced, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, General Science, Agriculture, Computer Studies, Home Science, Drawing and Design, Aviation Technology, Building and Construction, Electrical Technology, and Metal Technology.
Other STEM options include Power Mechanics, Wood Technology, Media Technology, and Marine and Fisheries Technology.
KICD also listed subjects under the social science options. These include Advanced English, Literature in English, Indigenous Language, Kiswahili Kipevu/Kenya Sign Language, Fasihi ya Kiswahili, Sign Language, Arabic, French, German, and Mandarin Chinese.
Subjects in the social sciences category also include History and Citizenship, Geography, Christian Religious Education/Islamic Religious Education/Hindu Religious Education, and Business Studies.
The final category encompasses arts and sports science, offering subjects such as Sports and Recreation, Physical Education, Music and Dance, Theatre and Film, and Fine Arts.
“While English and Kiswahili are indicated as compulsory, learners who opt for these learning areas as their subjects of specialization shall go through a differentiated curriculum in terms of scope, experiences, and assessment. Such learners shall, therefore, take Advanced English or Kiswahili Kipevu with an additional two lessons.
“It is recommended that at least two learning areas should be from the chosen Pathway. In exceptional cases, some learners may opt for one learning area from the chosen Pathway and a maximum of two learning areas from any of the three pathways; depending on the learner’s career projections and with guidance by the principals at Senior School,” the curriculum design added.
Meanwhile, stakeholders have been invited to share their views on the proposed subjects and curriculum design.
