The Higher Education Loans Board has over time been issuing loans to undergraduate, TVET and colleges students for their upkeep and even fees payment. The board has also been offering Jielimishe loans to salaries students.
In this post, we will give a guide on how to submit an application for undergraduate and TVET students.
Undergraduate HELB Loans
This loan is available for undergraduate students who are pursuing Bachelor’s Degree in any public and private university withing the East African Community.
In order for one to qualify for this loan, they must have been placed by the body responsible in placing students into higher institutions of learning like Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) as either government sponsored or self sponsored. Module II students can also benefit out of this loan.
Beneficiaries of the loan will be required to repay the loan after one year of Graduation where these money attracts an interest of 4%.
For undergraduate students, they can apply and they can receive up to a maximum of Ksh60,000 for given number of years depending on the duration of your course.
Once you are awarded your amount, its subjected to administrative fees of Ksh500 from the amount disbursed by the board.
These loans are categorized into two, i.e First time Application Loans, secondary time application loans and Subsequent loans.
First time Application Loans
This loans is applied by students joining first year first semester for undergraduate students placed by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).
Second and Subsequent Loan
Students apply for this after they have received their first loan. This is for applicants who are applying for the second, third, fourth time as per the program duration.
How to apply for a HELB Loan as a First Time Applicant:
- Visit the HELB website or Higher Education Funds portal to access the students portal the click on ‘Register’ to create an account.
- Ensure that you have you National Identity card. Enter your ID number or KCSE Index number for those who don’t have an ID.
- Ensure you have a valid E-mail address. Enter the email address and preferred password the click on ‘register’.
- Once you have registered, log into your email address and check your inbox/spam/junk folder to activate your email with the link sent the click login after email activation.
- You will be prompted to enter the valid phone number where the code will be sent to. If you find the code has expired, click on resend button to obtain new verification code.
- A page will open where you will be required to fill and update your profile with Bio-data.
- You will then give consent for the board to collect your bio-data. To agree to the terms of collecting your bio-data, Read through the consent form and check the checkbox to agree to the terms of use.
- Fill all your personal data wand click on save to proceed.
- Click on submit to send your loan/scholarship application request.
- You will be required to consent to the loan application terms before submitting your application for purposes of processing your data.
- You will be required to update your guarantor details.
- You will be required to fill the fields for loan payment information including the bank details or Mobile payment.
- You can now submit your loan application for consideration.
NB: Ensure that you print dully filled form and keep it as evidence for application.
How to Apply for Second and Subsequent Loan
- Download the HELB Application from the play store.
- Open the app and enter the required details including; First Name, Mpesa registered phone number, E-mail address, National ID and KRA Pin number. These details are necessary for generating a pin for logging into the app.
- Click on the check box for license agreement.
- You will be required to read on the mandatory financial literacy notes then answer a few questions in the page. The scroll down and click ‘Proceed’.
- Click on the loans tab the select the undergraduate loan then click on undergraduate subsequent loan.
- Fill in the fields with necessary details and then click on submit. You will receive a message conforming your application success. A serial number will be sent to your phone number which will be used for follow-up.
You should not that you must have Ksh1 in your Mpesa for your phone number validation.
For those students who don’t have the Safaricom line, can submit their applications via the portal and print the form and send it to the HELB offices.
Requirements for Application
- A valid email address for the applicant (Student)
- Valid telephone number (must be registered in your name to apply for a loan)
- KCPE and KCSE index numbers and year of examination
- Passport size photo
- Copy of your National ID (for loan application)
- College/University admission letter
- Your parents’ registered telephone number
- Your parents’ national ID number
- Death certificate if any of your parent is deceased.
- Your birth certificate.
- Two guarantors’ (Can be your parents) ID numbers and registered telephone numbers (for loan application)
- Copy of the sponsorship letter if you were sponsored in Secondary school.
