Junior Secondary School (JSS) interns in Kakamega County have announced their refusal to attend classes until they are granted Permanent and Pensionable (PnP) employment terms. They are also demanding compensation for a full year, citing consistent underpayment by the government.
Expressing their dissatisfaction, the interns emphasized that their low morale could negatively affect their teaching quality and lead to poor academic performance among students. After staging a peaceful demonstration in Kakamega town, they requested a meeting with the Teachers Service Commission director to address their grievances.
Francis Odero, one of their representatives, highlighted that despite possessing the necessary qualifications and skills to become full-time teachers, many of them are facing financial hardship. He urged the government to confirm their employment by July 1st of this year.
Odero also raised concerns about Members of Parliament issuing TSC letters to public school teachers, a responsibility he believes solely belongs to the Commission.
Meanwhile, Silas Owiti, a seasoned teacher supporting the interns, affirmed their competence and capability to teach. He urged the government to honor its obligations and recognize the dedication and willingness of the interns as educators, maintaining a stance of professionalism throughout the protest.
