Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has announced that Monday, June 17 will be a public holiday.
In a gazette notice, the CS mentioned that this declaration aligns with the celebration of Eid-Al-Adha by the Muslim community. The decision is also based on the authority granted to the CS by the Public Holidays Act.
“It is notified for the general information of the public that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act, declares Monday, the 17th June, 2024, shall be a public holiday to mark Eid-Al-Adha,” read the notice in part.
Eid-Al-Adha, often called the Festival of Sacrifice, is celebrated by Muslims worldwide to honor Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion to Allah. The prophet is remembered for his willingness to sacrifice his son, Ismail, as an act of obedience to Allah. According to the Quran, Allah provided a ram for Ibrahim to sacrifice instead of his son.
As part of the celebrations, Muslims will sacrifice an animal and distribute the meat to those in need within their communities. This festivity coincides with the end of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.
Eid-Al-Adha follows Eid-Al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan. This year, Eid-Al-Fitr was celebrated on April 10, after Muslims observed 30 days of fasting from March 11, 2024.
