KCA University en partnership with UK varsities tackle climate

KCA University has initiated the inaugural Learning and Design Lab as part of the UK-Kenya University Partnerships initiative aimed at addressing climate change.

In collaboration with the British Council, this innovative program falls under the Going Global partnerships, which bring together UK and Kenyan universities along with industry partners to tackle climate resilience challenges through collaborative solutions.

Participating universities include Rongo University and Strathmore University from Kenya, as well as Nottingham University Business School and the University of Portsmouth from the UK, and Imperial College of Science, Technology, and Medicine.

KCA University has received Ksh6 million through the program to participate in this endeavor.

The first 5-day Learning and Design Lab, to be held in Nairobi, will bring together 20 students from KCA University and Nottingham University Business School to co-create human-centered solutions to specific climate challenges posed by industry partners.

Through interactive workshops and activities, participants will engage in hands-on learning experiences aimed at driving meaningful impact.

The Vice Chancellor and CEO of KCA University, Prof Isaiah Wakindiki, stated in an interview that the two institutions have initiated a student exchange program focused on developing innovative solutions to enhance climate resilience.

Prof Wakindiki emphasized that climate change presents a complex and urgent challenge requiring innovative and interdisciplinary approaches. He highlighted the importance of empowering students with innovative problem-solving methods and fostering collaboration with peers from diverse backgrounds.

The immersive experience provided by the partnership offers students the chance to tackle real-world challenges, hone their skills, and gain invaluable practical knowledge before entering the workforce or venturing into entrepreneurship.

Furthermore, the program aims to enhance innovation and entrepreneurship in universities by facilitating deeper engagement between higher education institutions and industry stakeholders.

Industry partners involved in the program, including Chemolex, Greenspoon, and Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment, will explore key challenges and identify opportunities for innovation and the development of new products and services.

The British Council has appointed Circle Innovation to facilitate the Learning and Design Labs, leveraging their expertise in innovation practices across the region.
