Keep Off JSS Demos, KNUT Cautions Primary School Interns
|Keep Off JSS Demos, KNUT Cautions Primary School Interns. The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has advised primary school interns against participating in demonstrations organized by junior secondary school (JSS) teachers.
This caution comes in response to the announcement by the Kenyan Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) regarding a peaceful demonstration scheduled for Monday, April 29th, nationwide.
The demonstration is a response to a recent ruling by the Employment & Labour Relations Court concerning the employment status of JSS teachers hired as interns by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
In a memorandum dated April 26th, 2024, KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu emphasized the need for primary teacher interns to prioritize their teaching responsibilities.
Oyuu stated, “We write to remind all union members, particularly primary teacher interns, to refrain from participating in the upcoming JSS demonstrations.”
KNUT assured its members that TSC is actively working towards confirming them into permanent and pensionable terms by January 2025.
Highlighting the importance of maintaining continuity in JSS classes, Oyuu urged primary teachers to ensure the learning process continues in the absence of JSS teachers.
He acknowledged the scarcity of JSS teachers and emphasized the role of primary teachers in filling the gap. KNUT expressed appreciation to its members for their attention to this matter and called for solidarity as the union continues to advocate for the rights and welfare of teachers.
