The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has admitted the fact there was was an error in printing of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results.
The council admits that there was omission of the Minus (-) sign for some grades which resulted to printing of for example D- (minus) as D plain.
This revelation comes at a time when the Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu and his KNEC CEO counterpart David Njengere were grilled by the National Assembly Education committee regarding discrepancies in the 2023 KCSE Results.
The National Assembly committee was informed that 3,018 candidates in 1059 examination centres were infiltrated by this error.
In defence, KNEC stated that the results on the online portal was correct only the printed nominal rolls distributed to schools had this error. KNEC informed the committee that all the affected schools have received their correct results.
The committee sought to know whether the council understands the trauma and confusion they caused to these students before correcting the mess.
Education CS, Machogu told the committee that the same error will never be iterated in future citing mechanisms put in place to prevent them.
“A technical team was constituted, with representation from the Ministry of ICT and the Digital Economy, the National Computer and Cybercrimes Coordination Unit and the ICT Authority,” Machogu stated.
“By a letter dated March 4, 2024, the team submitted its report to the Ministry of Education”, he added.
During the meeting, it was recommended that a multi-sectoral ICT team be constituted that will oversee the examination processing starting from marking to release of results. Regular load test to be conducted from time to time to assess System capacity.
KNEC was also mandated to upgrade its systems ( IT infrastructure) by implementing continuous performance monitoring to enable them identify potential challenges.
After the release of the 2023 KCSE results on January 8, 2024 by the Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, concerns were raised by a number of parents who claimed there were anomalies detected after the results were released.
This came after a number of schools got different results upon logging into the KNEC portal where subject grades kept changing prompting a whistle blower to reveal the glitch.
