KNEC issues fresh guidelines for KCSE supervisors, invigilators

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has released new directives for the recruitment of supervisors and invigilators for this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.

According to the updated guidelines, supervisors and invigilators can no longer be assigned to centres where they have a personal interest. From now on, they must declare any such interests at their assigned centres.

Both supervisors and invigilators are required to be secondary school teachers, unlike previous years when only supervisors were high school teachers and invigilators were from primary schools.

Additionally, only those who have registered through the CP2 system will be assigned to oversee the 2024 national exams, and their compensation will be processed through this system. Teachers in schools that have learners in the Stage-Based Pathway will invigilate their own students.

For every 10 students, one invigilator will be assigned, and they will be required to sign a declaration form. KILEA centres will not have supervisors or centre managers.

Centre managers are responsible for ensuring that supervisors and invigilators report daily to their assigned centres and verifying their information. Supervisors for the KCSE exams will rotate weekly instead of staying at one school for the entire exam period, and they will need to prepare handover notes for the incoming supervisors.

Supervisors and invigilators will not be posted to centres they have worked at in the previous two consecutive years. One supervisor will be assigned for every 200 candidates, and only teachers employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will be eligible for deployment.

Both hosted and hosting centres will have their own centre managers, though the hosting manager will be responsible for collecting and returning exam materials. KNEC also noted that sub-counties facing recruitment challenges should email si@knec.ac.ke for assistance.
