KNEC Plans to Implement JSS Exam Retooling. The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has announced plans to retool examiners for Junior Secondary Schools (JSS). According to KNEC, these examiners will soon start receiving new tools.
This comes in response to the concerns raised by teachers about the Grade 9 pilot study in JSS, specifically regarding the roles of examiners and invigilators.
Some examiners have already received invitations to participate in the Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA) pilot exam, scheduled for July 15-19, 2024. In a statement, KNEC emphasized the imminent retooling of JSS examiners, indicating that preparations are already underway.
KNEC highlighted the significant number of examiners in its system, which currently stands at 42,000. They called for patience among teachers as the assessments are being distributed, reassuring them that the process is being handled efficiently.
Earlier this year, KNEC rescheduled the summative exams for the Kenya Prevocational Level Education (KPLEA) and KJSEA from July 1-5, 2024, to July 15-19, 2024.
Meanwhile, Grade 9 students are preparing for their exams, which will take place within a year. Upon completion, these students will proceed to Grade 10 in Senior Schools in 2026, entering a three-year program that adheres to the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).
Students in Senior Schools will have the opportunity to specialize by choosing one of three tracks: STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), social sciences (also referred to as humanities), or performing arts (including sports and music). This approach is part of the government’s broader initiative to promote curriculum specialization.
This unrest highlights the ongoing challenges and negotiations within the education sector as the government seeks to implement these new strategies and reforms.
