KUPPET calls off teacher strike after meeting with TSC

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has suspended the teachers’ strike that began last week after discussions with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on Monday.

During a joint press briefing, KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori and TSC CEO Nancy Macharia announced that the strike had been paused as the TSC addresses key issues. Misori noted that the collective bargaining agreement has been honored, medical coverage has been restored, and TSC is working to secure funds for teacher promotions while also reviewing the confirmation of acting teachers. He assured that teachers involved in the strike will not face any repercussions.

Macharia further emphasized the dedication of teachers and stated that the TSC’s priority is to work alongside unions for the benefit of students, with efforts underway to make up for lost time. She acknowledged there is still much work ahead but progress is being made.

The strike was originally called to demand the implementation of the 2021-2025 collective bargaining agreement (CBA). Although the government has begun the second phase of this agreement, KUPPET argues that the salary increases are still insufficient to meet teachers’ needs.

Despite the strike, teachers have recognized certain improvements, including the government’s efforts to hire Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers and ensure proper compensation for those in acting roles. Nevertheless, KUPPET continues to call for more substantial actions, particularly in relation to teacher promotions.
