Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura addressed the issue of schools failing to resume lessons despite the directive. In a press conference on Monday, Mwaura attributed the delay primarily to severe weather conditions.
In Nyeri County, flooded classrooms and washrooms, along with mudslides, have forced the closure of 12 primary and 16 secondary schools. Similarly, in Kisumu County, overflow from Lake Victoria has submerged at least five schools.
In West Pokot County, washed-away bridges have made two schools inaccessible, while in Nakuru County, one school continues to shelter flood victims, delaying its reopening. Mwaura highlighted specific incidents contributing to the delays, such as a sunken toilet in a secondary school in Kirinyaga County and closures of ten schools in Kilifi County.
Nationwide, 44 primary schools and 27 secondary schools are yet to reopen. The government is working with national and county multi-agency teams to rebuild infrastructure and ensure a safe environment for students. Mwaura stressed the importance of parents ensuring their children’s safety during their commute, especially during peak flooding seasons.
He also urged school administrators to stay updated on weather conditions to prevent students from attending school during hazardous situations.
Mwaura underscored the significant impact of the floods, anticipating an estimated Ksh80 billion loss for the government, with road infrastructure being severely affected. The delay in school reopening highlights the ongoing challenges posed by inclement weather, necessitating coordinated efforts to mitigate their effects and safeguard the well-being of children and staff.
