Ministry Of Education Extends Term 2&3 Dates

Due to ongoing floods, the government has made the decision to extend the dates for the second and third terms of instruction for the current academic year. Despite these changes, the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exam, slated to commence in November for Form Four candidates, remains unaffected. Originally scheduled to commence on April 29th, the reopening of the second term for nursery, primary, and secondary schools has been delayed until May 6th due to the flooding.

Ezekiel Machogu, the Cabinet Secretary for Education, expressed the possibility of continuing online learning, acknowledging its limitations but assuring parents that measures are in place to ensure uninterrupted education.

Encouraging students, particularly those in Form Four, to maintain focus on their studies at home, Machogu emphasized the importance of ongoing academic engagement. The academic calendar for the current year included three weeks off from April 6th to 28th and a midterm break from February 29th to March 3rd. The first term spanned 13 weeks from January 8th to April 5th.

Originally planned for 14 weeks from April 29th to August 2nd, the second term has been indefinitely postponed due to the current flooding crisis, disrupting the established schedule.

The third term, the shortest of the three, is scheduled to begin on August 26th and conclude on October 25th. National exams, including the Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA) and the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), are set for October 28th to 31st.

Notably, this year will not see any candidates sitting for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) due to the phase-out of the 8-4-4 system. Machogu expressed confidence that the KCSE exams would proceed as scheduled, expressing hope for the cessation of rains and the eventual reopening of schools when conditions improve.
