Ahead of the school reopening on Monday, May 13, Education Principal Secretary for Basic Education, Dr. Belio Kipsang, has emphasized the importance of collaboration between school management and parents to ensure the safety of learners, especially in light of the heightened risk of waterborne diseases during flooding.
In a circular addressed to all regional, county, and sub-county directors of education, Dr. Belio highlights the necessity of engaging with local authorities, community leaders, and relevant stakeholders for effective disaster preparedness and response. Schools are urged to keep parents, guardians, and learners informed about any emerging issues.
School heads are instructed to conduct staff meetings to prepare for the arrival of learners, discuss safety protocols, provide support for affected learners, and report any findings to the Sub-County Director of Education for further guidance and support if needed.
Additionally, school heads are tasked with removing barriers such as uniform and school fees, especially for those affected by the floods. They are also required to develop lesson recovery plans to compensate for lost time caused by the delays resulting from flooding, ensuring that the curriculum is effectively covered within the academic year.
