The Ministry of Education has announced that boarding school students will begin their half-term break on Monday, June 24, instead of the initially planned Wednesday, June 26. This unexpected adjustment was conveyed to school principals via a memo, which stated that the earlier release would provide students and their parents with ample time to arrange their travel plans before the expected Finance Bill protests on Tuesday.
Following the Ministry’s directive, school principals informed parents to start collecting their children from today. Those who cannot pick up their children today will need to wait until Wednesday. This change comes in response to the widespread public opposition to the Finance Bill 2024 proposals, which have triggered considerable unrest nationwide.
Since last Tuesday, a significant number of Kenyans, especially those from Generation Z, have been protesting against the proposed Finance Bill. The demonstrations have underscored the widespread dissatisfaction with the bill, which many fear will worsen the country’s economic conditions. These protests have been particularly intense, reflecting deep-rooted frustrations among the populace.

The protests peaked last Thursday, spreading to numerous cities and towns, including Eldoret, Nanyuki, and Nyeri. These demonstrations have seen high levels of participation and have highlighted the public’s concerns regarding the bill.
The government’s decision to adjust the school calendar is a direct response to the escalating unrest and aims to prevent potential disruptions caused by the protests.
In summary, the early half-term break is a precautionary measure intended to ensure the safety and convenience of students and their families during the ongoing political and social unrest in the country.
The Ministry of Education’s proactive approach highlights the gravity of the situation and the necessity for adaptive measures during times of national turmoil.
