MPs Defend School Feeding Programme In Arid Areas

Makueni Constituency Member of Parliament Susan Kiamba has voiced her concerns over a proposal to cancel the school feeding program, warning that such a move could lead to increased school dropouts. Speaking at the unveiling of a new bus at ACK Wote Township Primary and Junior Secondary School, she emphasized that food is a basic necessity and should not be subject to negotiation.

Kiamba urged fellow parliamentarians to reject proposals that impose additional burdens on citizens, including rising costs of basic commodities like bread. She acknowledged the need to address national debt but argued that it should not come at the expense of people’s well-being. “We want to get out of debt, but people don’t have to die to get out of debts. Let’s lead with consciousness and strategize on how to clear the debt without making people suffer,” she said.

Highlighting the importance of school feeding programs, Kiamba noted that many learners come from poor backgrounds and rely on school meals to concentrate in class. She warned that withdrawing the program could lead to higher dropout rates.

On the issue of capitation, she pointed out its erratic nature but assured that MPs are actively pushing for timely government disbursements. Kiamba also called for Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers to be employed on permanent and pensionable terms. She criticized the government for having misguided priorities and urged it to take education more seriously, especially in the context of the new curriculum. “We want the teachers to get clear employment terms,” she added.

Regarding bursaries, Kiamba encouraged parents to continue applying but advised those who are financially capable to refrain from doing so, ensuring that the most needy students benefit from the funds.
