The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is set to begin paying intern teachers their new salaries following the release of funds to confirm their permanent employment.
According to Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, Ksh 18.7 billion has been allocated to secure permanent contracts for a total of 46,000 intern teachers. Ogamba made this announcement today, also revealing that an additional Ksh 13.5 billion has been released to implement the second phase of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for salary increases among teachers.
“I am pleased to announce the disbursement of Ksh 18.7 billion for the hiring of intern teachers and Ksh 13.5 billion for the implementation of salary increments as part of the CBA. We are dedicated to raising the quality of education and ensuring that our teachers are properly compensated,” said Ogamba.
Currently, TSC has a total of 46,000 intern teachers on its payroll, including 21,550 junior school and 4,000 primary school interns recruited in February 2023, 450 secondary school interns hired in April 2023, and an additional 18,000 junior school and 2,000 primary school interns recruited in September 2023.

Some junior secondary school teachers had previously joined members of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) in a national strike, which among other demands, called for the confirmation of intern teachers to permanent positions.
As part of the formalization process, the teachers will be required to complete employment contracts with TSC, officially transitioning them to permanent roles with improved salaries.
