New TSC Salary Scale and Grading System For Teachers. Teachers unions over time has been organizing demonstration on the streets in a bid to force the government hike their salaries and allowances. This matter over time now has been put rest after the Kenya Union of Teachers (KNUT) negotiated for the teachers and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) agreed to hike their salaries in three phases.

In this post, we are going to discuss the new TSC job groups and their salary scales as of 2024.

TSC Job groups and Corresponding Salary Scales

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has a responsibility of registering, recruiting, deploying and managing teachers across all the public schools in Kenya. Here below we will highlight the various TSC Salaries and their corresponding grading system for instructors.

In the new job groups, the previous one was scrapped and others merged. Check out below the new grading system for all teachers working in Kenyan public schools.

TSC Salary Structure 2024

TSC remunerate teachers depending on their various job groups both for those teaching in primary and those in Secondary Schools.

This new salary scales were to be implemented in two phases starting July 1st 2023. The second phase of the implementation will take place in July 1st 2024 for all those teachers actively on duty.

The table below represents the salary scales of the current basic pay.

Basic Salary of C1 Teachers

In this job group, we have Lecturer III, Secondary Teacher III and Primary Teacher I. Their salary scale ranges between Ksh. 28,491- Ksh. 35,614.

New TSC Salary Scale and Grading System For Teachers

Basic Salary For C4 Teachers

This job group houses various positions such as Senior Lecturer IV, Senior Master IV, SNE Senior Teacher in primary, SNE teacher I in secondary and the Deputy Headteacher II. Their salary scale also spans from Ksh. 52,308- Ksh. 67,220.

Secondary School Teacher Salary in Kenya

Secondary school teachers are designated to teach in post primary schools. These teachers earn a salary renaging from Ksh. 35,614 for those in the position of Secondary Teacher III. Principals earn a salary of Ksh. 127,069 per month.

Types of Allowances Paid by TSC

There two types of Allowances that are paid by the Teachers Service Commission. They include;

  1. Remunerative Allowance
  2. Reimbursable Allowance

Remunerative Allowances are paid to teachers regularly together with the month salary while reimbursable allowances are paid to teachers on application in case a teacher has used his/her own money in executing official functions.

Primary Teachers Salaries In Kenya

Teachers who teach in primary schools are paid a basic Salary of Ksh. 28,491 for those lower in the job group and others can be paid up to Ksh. 78,667 per month like Headteachers.

Highest paid Teachers in Kenya

Teachers who teach in post primary institutions are definitely paid higher salaries than those in primary schools. In the secondary school cadre, Chief Principals are the ones who receive the highest salaries from the commission.

Their salaries ranges from Ksh. 131,380 all the way to Ksh. 159,534 per month.
