No Learning in Junior Secondary Schools As Teachers are Planing Demos Across the Country
|No Learning in Junior Secondary Schools. Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers are planning a reopening day demonstration to pressure their employer to take a closer look at their situation, therefore there may not be any classes tomorrow.
As their protests come to a head, the so-called “moguls” will be bringing their petitions to different TSC county offices tomorrow, according to letters that Education News received from a number of Officer Commanding Stations (OCSs) across the nation.
They will be requesting that TSC rescind its appeal and convert all JSS intern teachers to permanent and pensionable (PnP) terms through their individual Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) sections nationwide.
A letter signed by KUPPET Nandi Executive Secretary Paul Rotich and addressed to the OCS Kapsabet states: “We as KUPPET/JSS teachers of Nandi County hereby give notice to the Kenya Police that we will hold a demo along Namgoi-Kapsabet Town Road up to the TSC offices in Kapsabet Town in response to the Employment and Labour Relations Court judgement by Hon. Justice Ongaya on the legality of internship under Teachers Service Commission.”
Corresponding letters, the majority of which were dated between April 24, 2024, and April 26, 2024, were written by KUPPET Narok and signed by Charles Ng’eno, the branch executive secretary; KUPPET Kisumu, by Zablon Awange; KUPPET Kwale, by Leonard Oroje; and KUPPET Elgeyo Marakwet, by Paul Kibor.
Ng’eno of Narok stated in a letter dated April 26, 2024, “The purpose of the demonstration is to demand that TSC withdraw its appeal on the ruling, call upon TSC to honour the court ruling and confirm all JSS interns, and call upon TSC to compensate all JSS interns, as directed by the court ruling for the period they have served.
” Zablon Awange of Kisumu wrote to OCS Kisumu Central Police Station, “The purpose of this letter is to notify the police of the said demonstration and if possible to provide security to the JSS ‘Moguls’ as they pressurise the TSC employer.”
