Ruto Assures Confirmation of 26000 Interns

Ruto Assures Confirmation of 26000 Interns. Intern teachers at Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) can finally rejoice following President William Ruto’s announcement about their employment amidst budgetary adjustments by the National Treasury. Initially, the proposed budget cuts were set to reduce funding from Ksh347 billion to Ksh117 billion, but revisions were made to protect essential programs.

During a national address from State House, President Ruto revealed that intern teachers, along with medical interns, would be employed. This decision came in response to public demands to shield vital sectors from budget reductions after the Finance Bill 2024 was rejected.

“We will propose budget cuts of Sh177 billion and borrow the remainder. The borrowed funds will support critical areas that Kenyans have asked me to safeguard, including the hiring of JSS and medical interns,” Ruto announced.

He elaborated further, saying, “The borrowing will increase the budget deficit from 3.3 percent to 4.6 percent of the GDP, which is still lower than last year.”

Intern teachers were anxious about their transition to Permanent and Pensionable (PnP) terms, initially scheduled for this month.

According to a report by Education News, the initial budget cuts proposed by the treasury indicated a Ksh18 billion reduction in the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) budget, which could have delayed the hiring of teachers.

Moreover, the State Department for Higher Education received favorable news as President Ruto announced additional funds for the new funding model introduced in the subsector last year.
