School Calendar for Second Term Dealt A Blow After Today’s Announcement.

As the country gears up for the reopening of learning institutions on Monday, May 13, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has outlined the plan for recovering the two weeks lost during the floods.

Machogu revealed that the government will consider extending Term Two by a few days, especially for students in Form Four.

This extension aims to ensure that teachers and students have sufficient time to cover the syllabus before the Third Term, during which candidates will sit for national examinations. Machogu emphasized the need to adjust the school calendar, possibly reducing the August holiday break from three weeks to minimize the number of days schools remain closed.

Originally, students were slated to resume learning on April 29, 2024, but due to intensified rains, the opening dates were postponed by one week. However, President William Ruto extended the closure of schools indefinitely due to the flooding situation.

This decision was later reviewed based on advisories and projections from the Kenya Meteorological Department.

The school calendar for the Second Term includes the nationwide reopening of schools on May 13, a half-term break for four days starting on June 20, and the commencement of the August holidays on August 5 (subject to change according to Machogu’s announcements). Term Three is set to begin on August 23.
