Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has issued a stern warning to school heads against the practice of inflating school levies ahead of the reopening of schools on Monday, May 13, 2024.
Speaking in Trans Nzoia County during the national tree planting exercise, Machogu emphasized the Ministry’s stance on adhering to the stipulated parental school fees obligations for each category of schools.
Machogu emphasized that schools found contravening the directive by asking parents to pay more than the Ministry’s stipulations would face immediate consequences, including dismissal and legal action. He highlighted the importance of upholding the right to education for every child, as enshrined in the laws of Kenya.
Furthermore, Machogu issued a one-week ultimatum for all county directors of education to provide detailed reports on schools violating the directive, ensuring appropriate action is taken.
He reiterated the Ministry’s guidelines regarding parental school fees obligations, specifying the fees requirements for national schools, extra-county schools, county schools, and day schools.
In addition to addressing school fees concerns, Machogu revealed that the Ministry has devised plans to assist individuals whose academic certificates were destroyed by floods, ensuring they receive new copies.
This initiative underscores the Ministry’s commitment to supporting students and mitigating the challenges posed by natural disasters on their education journey.
