Schools Directed to Retain Learners Who Had Reported. The Ministry of EducationMinistry of Education has given an update on the postponing of the Second Term reopening date, requesting that schools where students have already reported maintain them.

Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang stated in a memo to County Directors of Education that schools hold complete responsibility for the safety of students who had already reported before the postponement was announced.

“Such learners should be retained within the school premises and not exposed to the dangers of travelling back home under the current adverse weather conditions,” Kipsang said.

Schools were set to return on Monday, April 29, for the Second Term, however the government pushed the date out to May 6.

Communication of the postponement was relayed around midnight, after some students had already left home. Some students were stranded Monday morning in towns far from home while they considered their future steps.

“Any learner who has not travelled to school should remain at home,” he stated. He explained that the postponement was essential since an audit revealed that several schools had been significantly impacted by the continuous heavy rains.

“The damage caused by these rains in some of the affected schools is significant. Furthermore, the transit systems have been considerably impacted and may not be safe for students to use’, PS Kipsang stated.

He stated that, with schools set to return on May 6, the ministry will work with appropriate agencies and stakeholders to develop measures to mitigate the negative consequences of the rain.

Meanwhile, the PS asked the County Directors of Education to ensure that all subsequent updates are relayed to parents and guardians so that they are kept aware about the steps being taken to protect their children.

He also instructed education officials to guarantee that, with the postponement of school reopenings, food that had already been purchased is stored safely to reduce losses during the rainy season.

Kipsang also emphasised the importance of schools implementing adequate security measures to secure school property during the postponement time.

“This is is to prevent any potential loss or damage that could occur due to the heavy rains or other related incidents.”

The PS also requested that schools provide daily updates on their level of preparedness for reopening and the steps taken to mitigate floods.

“These updates are cruicial for the ministry to monitor the situation and provide assistance where necessary,” the minister stated.
