Schools to Reopen on Monday, May 13

The government has announced the reopening of all schools, a much-awaited development following an extended closure due to devastating floods.State House officials have confirmed that schools are set to resume operations officially on Monday, May 13, 2024.

This decision emerged from a closed-door meeting where President William Ruto engaged with leaders from Laikipia and Kajiado regions. Secretary of State Functions, Mike Gitonga, quoted President Ruto’s directive, emphasizing the significance of resuming educational activities.

The decision to reopen schools on Monday aligns with advisories from the Kenya Meteorological Department, which forecasts a reduction in rainfall intensity starting this week. Recognizing the urgent need to restore normalcy, various government agencies, including the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), are collaborating to expedite the repair and construction of damaged school infrastructure.

Additionally, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) are actively engaged in flood mitigation efforts across the country, augmenting the government’s response to the crisis.

Initially scheduled for Monday, April 29, the reopening of schools was postponed by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu due to security concerns arising from the heavy rains. However, with the situation persisting, President Ruto intervened, further delaying the resumption of academic activities.

During a national address on Friday, May 3, President Ruto directed the Ministry of Education to postpone the reopening until conditions improved significantly, prioritizing the safety and well-being of students and staff members alike.
