Shortlisting of 2,000 TVET Trainers To Start Next Week. Esther Muoria, Principal Secretary of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, has announced the Ministry’s plan to recruit 2,000 new trainers for technical institutions nationwide. She noted that the government had recently hired 1,300 trainers for TVETs, who are already deployed in various institutions.

These trainers underwent training in student-based pedagogy at the Kenya School of TVET.

Speaking at the Kabete National Polytechnic during celebrations marking 100 years of TVET, Muoria acknowledged the shortage of trainers in TVET institutions and emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing this gap by recruiting more trainers. She mentioned that the President has allocated funds from the Treasury for the recruitment of these additional trainers.

According to Muoria, the student-trainer ratio in TVETs should ideally be 1:20, but it currently stands at 1:55. She also revealed the government’s plan to construct a TVET institution in every constituency in the country, although the proposal to have a National TVET institution in every constituency was deemed excessive.

Muoria highlighted the ongoing awareness campaign about TVET institutions, symbolized by a TVET torch traveling across the country. She stressed the importance of TVETs in equipping trainees with relevant skills for the job market, noting that graduates are sought after by international firms.

Additionally, Muoria mentioned that TVET trainers are undergoing retooling at the Kenya School of TVET to enhance their skills, with the involvement of retired industry specialists to assist in training. She expressed concern about potential overflow of student population in TVETs in the coming years and emphasized the importance of quality training.

Furthermore, Muoria discussed the implementation of skills competence certification for TVET students, which she likened to university degrees offered in various universities. She warned against the proliferation of fake certificates and stated that the Ministry would collaborate with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to address this issue.

At the launch of the TVETs at 100 celebration, Muoria emphasized the importance of recognizing the benefits derived from TVET institutions over the years. Kabete National Polytechnic Principal, Patrick Muchemi, echoed this sentiment, urging TVET managers to ensure the production of quality skilled learners to match the investments made by the government and development partners.
