Teachers’ Unions Protest Posting of New School Heads
|Teachers’ Unions Protest Posting of New School Heads. Teachers unions in Bomet County have voiced criticism against the Teachers Service Commission’s (TSC) decision to appoint 61 new school principals and head teachers to the region. The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) and the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) have jointly called for the postponement of the planned handover ceremony by TSC.
The unions argue that TSC’s action is unwarranted, especially considering that the appointed administrators have been serving in acting capacities for an extended period without proper verification. Led by executive secretaries Paul Kimeto (KUPPET) and Desmond Langat (KNUT), the unions have called upon the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to investigate the matter specific to Bomet County.
Addressing journalists in Bomet County, Kimeto urged the Rift Valley TSC Director to provide clarity on the situation. He questioned the rationale behind TSC’s continued delocalization of teachers, especially since the policy was abolished during the Kenya Kwanza government’s tenure.
The unions have warned of potential street protests if TSC fails to heed their concerns regarding the appointment of new school heads. They demand transparency and fairness from TSC, urging the commission to disclose the list of teachers receiving promotions in Bomet and postings in other areas.
Expressing dismay over the appointment of teachers from outside the region, Langat voiced concerns about its potential impact on local teachers’ morale. He stressed the competence and competitiveness of local teachers, asserting that their wealth of experience should enable them to progress like their counterparts nationwide.
Furthermore, Langat emphasized that there is no leadership vacuum in the affected schools, as the incumbent administrators have effectively managed them without issues. The unions are keen on ensuring that TSC adheres to the new law and respects the interests of local educators in Bomet County. Teachers’ Unions Protest Posting of New School Heads
