Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has unveiled plans to mitigate the two-week learning hiatus caused by recent floods. Originally slated to resume on April 29, 2024, students encountered a one-week delay due to intensified rains, as announced by Machogu.
However, President William Ruto extended the closure of schools indefinitely due to flooding, a decision later revised based on advisories from the Kenya Meteorological Department.
Term two is now scheduled to commence on May 13 and conclude on August 5. During this term, students will enjoy a midterm break from June 20 to 23, followed by an extended three-week holiday from August 5 to 25.
Concurrently, teachers’ training institutions will conduct term two from April 29 to August 2, with holidays spanning from August 5 to 30.
The revised school calendar for the second term is as follows:
– May 13: Nationwide school reopening after an extended closure.
– June 20: Half-term break for four days.
– August 5: Commencement of August holidays (dates subject to change based on Machogu’s directives).
– August 23: School reopening for term three.
Term three, the final term of the academic year, will span nine weeks from August 26 to October 25. Notably, exams for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA) are scheduled for October 28 to 31.
Subsequently, the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams will take place from November 4 to 22.
Following the exams, students will enjoy a lengthy December holiday from October 28 to January 3, 2025. Concurrently, the final semester for teacher training institutions will last from August 26 to November 8, followed by an extended December holiday from November 11 to January 3, 2025.
