TSC CEO Nancy Macharia’s Retirement Details

Dr. Nancy Macharia currently leads the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), but reports suggest she will soon retire, sparking interest in her successor. TSC is known as the largest employer in East and Central Africa.

According to credible sources, Dr. Macharia will begin terminal leave in March next year, with her official retirement scheduled for June 2025. This timeline allows for ample competition to determine her successor.

Last year, TSC provided clarity on Dr. Macharia’s retirement, amid conflicting reports about whether she would retire upon reaching the mandatory age or at the end of her contract.

Mr. Calvin Anyuor, TSC’s Communication Director of Legal, Labour, and Industrial Relations, affirmed Dr. Macharia’s status as a state officer, making retirement discussions subject to legal provisions rather than mandatory age.

Although Dr. Macharia reached the mandatory retirement age of 60, Anyuor stressed that she is eligible to complete her 10-year term as per the constitution and the TSC Act, ending in 2025.

Referring to the TSC Act of 2012, section 16(3), Anyuor reiterated that the Commission Secretary is indeed a state officer by law.

Born in 1963, Dr. Macharia has dedicated 28 years to the education sector, assuming office in 2015 after succeeding Gabriel Lengoiboni. Despite opposition, she renewed her contract for an additional five years in 2020. Dr. Macharia’s tenure has seen the implementation of various policies aimed at improving the education sector.
