TSC Clarifies Retooling Of P1 Teachers

According to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), P1 teachers who graduated before 2019 and are not employed by the Commission began a 9-month upgrading program in 2019 to elevate their P1 Certificates to a Diploma Level.

TSC emphasized that to promote inclusivity and non-discrimination, they continue to employ teachers with P1 certificates who have not pursued the diploma upgrade. Once employed, these teachers undergo a comprehensive retooling program to enable them to effectively implement the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

When asked whether TSC will prioritize teachers holding P1 certificates during recruitment once they upgrade to the Diploma level, the commission stated that it is an equal opportunity employer that adheres to legal principles.

They have established Recruitment Guidelines to govern the recruitment process lawfully, ensuring it respects the rights and freedoms outlined in the Constitution. These guidelines specify the skills and competencies required for recruitment.

Under these recruitment guidelines, TSC has also developed a Recruitment Score Card. This scorecard is inclusive, considering factors such as professional qualifications, age, length of stay since qualification as a teacher, and CBC upgrade. The commission provides a sample scorecard that awards higher marks to teachers who have completed the diploma upgrade program.
