TSC Confirms To Host 26000 JSS Inturns In July. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) plans to transition 26,000 junior secondary school (JSS) teacher interns to permanent, pensionable positions starting from July 2024. Priority will be given to those who joined the service in February 2023.
During the initial recruitment phase, 21,550 junior school interns and 4,000 primary school interns were hired. In April 2023, TSC added 450 secondary school intern teachers, who were subsequently distributed to various schools. By September 2023, an additional 2,000 primary school interns and 18,000 junior school interns will be recruited.
Despite ongoing financial challenges, a parliamentary group has confirmed that the available budget can accommodate the hiring of 26,000 interns. Originally, KSh18 billion was earmarked for employing 46,000 JSS intern teachers, but this figure is expected to be reduced to Sh13 billion.
To address the teacher shortage, TSC also announced plans to recruit an extra 20,000 interns by the end of the month, including 18,000 junior school and 2,000 primary school interns. Those currently interning and transitioning to permanent roles will also benefit from pension plans.
The estimated cost for converting the first group of 26,000 intern positions to full-time employment is Sh6.6 billion. Junior secondary school teachers, upon confirmation, will be placed in the C2 job group.
Teachers in the TSC job group C2 are entitled to various allowances. These include a house allowance, which varies depending on the teacher’s location. Teachers stationed in Nairobi receive a monthly house allowance of KES 16,500, while those in more remote areas receive KES 7,500.
