Deregistration of these teachers is in accordance to the Teachers Service Commission Act of 2012, which highlights the various grounds for deregistration.

Some of the grounds for deregistration can be;

a) Obtaining Registration via fraudulent means

b) Conviction of sexual offences

c) Getting involved in criminal activities

d) Incapacity as a result of Physical or mental illness.

The TSC Act states in section 30 (2) that once a teacher has been deregistered he/she ceases from practicing as a teacher from the day of removal.

A deregistered teacher may be reinstated to the register only by the commission’s directive upon due consideration in accordance to the professional standards.

The TSC Act under Section 44 (b) institutes serious penalties for those presenting false information while seeking registration. Those culpable of commiting this crime through deceit will face fines of Sh. 100,000 or imprisonment, or both to show the weighty of this crime.

The act also deters one from practicing as a teacher with our prior registration. Those who will employ such teachers in their schools will face the full force of the law. This law is meant to ensure that there is integrity and the quality of education is upheld to ensure learners receive quality education.

This is not the first time the commission has deregistered teachers, but has done the same in previous years like back in 2022, it deregistered 100 teachers over various misconducts.

In 2023, the commission made public a list of 73 teachers who were dismissed from the register over disciplinary matters.

In the gazette notice issued by the Teachers Service Commission, the CEO insisted that these teachers should cease from teaching at any level of education immediately.

Our of the total teachers dismissed, 10 of them have been stripped off their roles within the school’s Board of Management (BOM).
