Additionally, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced that they have begun a review of the Career Progression Guidelines (CPG). It was also mentioned that the commission plans to compensate teachers working in administrative positions on an interim basis.
“We are dedicated to safeguarding the well-being of our teachers and equipping them with the necessary tools to provide quality education,” said Macharia.
During the meeting, it was agreed that TSC would promote 51,000 teachers initially, while the remaining 130,000, according to the union, have experienced stagnation. This decision prompted the Kenya National Union of Teachers to call off its strike.
However, Kuppet continued its strike, pushing for the conversion of Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers to Permanent and Pensionable (PP) status despite the new proposals.
On Sunday, Kuppet raised additional demands, including a review of the continuous professional development criteria, which they described as punitive and responsible for the stagnation of teachers in several job groups.
They also called for compensation for teachers performing administrative duties in an acting capacity. These discussions unfolded in the context of a court ruling that ended the strike the previous week.
With the court ruling suspending the strike and concerns over potential reprisals against its members, Kuppet found itself with limited options. Sources indicated that the union met with TSC on Monday and decided to call off the strike.
“The Commission will continue promoting teachers as funds become available through budgetary allocations from Parliament,” said the TSC CEO.
Meanwhile, attention has now shifted to recovering the time lost during the first week of the strike. With just eight weeks remaining until national exams, concerns have been raised about learning disparities and the possible need for adjustments to the exams.
