TSC Mandatory Retooling Program For Teachers
|TSC Mandatory Retooling Program For Teachers. The Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER) Report has provided crucial recommendations for retooling teachers, particularly as Kenya transitions to a competency-based curriculum (CBC). With only five classes remaining under the 8-4-4 system, PWPER advocates for a one-year mandatory retooling program to ensure CBC compliance for all pre-service training graduates.
Additionally, it suggests a one-year mandatory internship program following pre-service training to attract, develop, and retain effective teachers.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has embraced a multi-agency approach to retooling, aiming to retool at least 229,000 primary school teachers and 55,125 junior secondary school teachers for successful CBC implementation. This effort represents 82 percent of the entire number of teachers hired, with ongoing training programs to cover all educators.
Moreover, TSC has introduced remote learning as a creative technique for curriculum implementation, benefiting 163,938 teachers.
Mr. Cheruiyot highlighted the importance of emphasizing teachers’ professional expertise, engagement, and good curriculum implementation. He stressed that continuous learning beyond pre-service training is essential to cope with the dynamic nature of education. As the country embraces continuous retooling, there will be a greater impact on both teachers and learners, ultimately boosting national development.
Embracing technological advancements is crucial for effective curriculum delivery, a concept highly recognized by CBC. TSC is committed to supporting programs, such as those by CEMASTEA, focusing on STEM education and addressing educational inequities.
Teacher Loice Owade emphasized the necessity of improving teaching to inspire more students to pursue STEM topics. She underscored the importance of JSS teachers receiving career guidance training to equip them with the necessary knowledge to inform their students about educational needs and labor market realities.
Ms. Owade emphasized that career advice should not be left solely to learners or uninformed parents. Instead, career teachers must be well-equipped with relevant knowledge and skills to guide students effectively.
