Since the adoption of the competency-based curriculum, there has been a noticeable shift in workload distribution, with secondary schools bearing the brunt of the work while primary schools experience a significant decrease in load. This shift reflects the structural changes brought about by the curriculum reform.
Following the Kenya Certificate of Basic Education (KCPE) examination, current sixth form students within the 8-4-4 system will transition to Form 1 when they progress from form 6 to form 7 in 2023. Grades 7, 8, and 9 are now taught in junior high schools under the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) 2-6-3-3-3 system.
After passing the national exam at the 6th grade level, students will proceed to secondary school in 2023, marking a pivotal moment in their educational journey.
To accommodate these changes, the Ministry of Education and Culture has identified specific primary schools for conversion into secondary schools. The Junior Secondary School (JSS) of these institutions will undergo upgrades to meet the required infrastructure standards. This development underscores the government’s commitment to providing quality education across all levels.
Efforts to improve educational infrastructure include consolidating registered and nearby schools, with some institutions housing both elementary and middle school sections within the same building.
Furthermore, recognizing the need to address the shortage of teachers in secondary schools, the Ministry of Education and the Department of Teachers have deployed primary and secondary educators to these institutions. High school teachers are now tasked with supervising both junior and senior high school levels.
Primary school teachers with specific qualifications are granted the opportunity to teach middle school students, provided they meet certain criteria. These qualifications include diplomas and degrees in Special Needs Education, Early Childhood Development Education, and Education with a secondary option.
Additionally, teachers lacking a C+ in KCSE or subject-specific qualifications but possessing relevant training are eligible to teach at the secondary level.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has pledged to deploy P1 teachers with these qualifications to secondary schools, emphasizing the importance of adequately trained educators in implementing the competency-based curriculum effectively. This strategic deployment encompasses teachers with degrees, higher degrees, postgraduate qualifications, and graduate degrees, including those with master’s and PhD degrees, to cater to the diverse educational needs of secondary schools.
