TSC Recruitment Of 20000 Grade 9 Teachers

The government has unveiled a plan to hire at least 20,000 teachers by 2025 to address the increased demand resulting from Grade 9 students remaining in primary schools.

During a speech in Bungoma, the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Education, Ezekiel Machogu, announced that Grade 8 students will transition to Grade 9 within the primary school system. This decision aims to ease the teaching burden and improve the quality of education for these students.

Machogu stated that the administration has already made allocations for the nation’s constituencies to support this transition. He emphasized that 6,000 new classrooms will be constructed before the end of the year, funded by a conditional grant of Sh3.4 billion. The collaboration between the National Government-Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) and the national government has been crucial in facilitating this initiative.

In addition to the domestic funding, the government has secured Sh9 billion from the World Bank to construct an additional 9,000 classrooms in elementary schools. With this funding, a total of 15,015 classrooms are expected to be completed by the end of the year, significantly expanding the capacity to accommodate the increasing number of students.

Furthermore, Machogu announced that the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has finalized the curriculum development for Grade 9 students. The release of learning materials is nearing completion, ensuring that students will have the necessary resources for their education.

Machogu also addressed and refuted rumors circulating on social media, clarifying that Grade 9 classes will not be moved to secondary schools next year. He denied allegations that he had directed the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) to develop a Grade 8 Kenya Primary Placement Examination (KEPPE) to place students in Grade 9.

There have been concerns about a teacher shortage in junior secondary schools. The fictitious circular claimed that the state intended to move Grade 9 instructors and students to secondary schools under the competency-based curriculum. This move was expected to impact teachers by reassigning junior secondary school instructors from primary schools to oversee classes 9, 10, 11, and 12 in high schools.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has acknowledged the significant teacher shortage in junior secondary schools. This shortage underscores the importance of the government’s plan to recruit 20,000 new teachers, ensuring that the education system can adequately support the growing number of students and maintain high educational standards.
