TSC To Employ 20,000 Teachers, Confirm 26,000 Interns

The current shortage witnessed in schools especially in Junior Secondary Schools will be tamed by the government as it prepares to employ 20,000 teachers on internship to fill the gap.

Following the joint meeting that was conducted between the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) came to a consensus that the commission will promote 30,000 teachers in the next financial year.

This comes after a six day engagement meeting involving Teachers’ representatives and commission at Sawela Lodge in Naivasha.

During the media briefing by KUPPET National Executive Committee, it was noted that senior TSC officials were missing in action.

While the chairman for Kuppet, Omboko Milemba was addressing the press, he indicated that 50,000 teachers who had stagnated in the same job group, 30,000 of them will benefit in the next financial year.

Milemba noted that many teachers have never been promoted since 2017 a stalemate that has been addressed squarely during the six day engagement in Naivasha starting from June this year.

Omboko further stated that the commission needs Sh. 4bn to aid in employment of 20,000 teachers meant to curb the visible crisis in Junior Schools.

Omboko while with other top KUPPET officials, said that the government has promised to relook into the Teachers’ medical cover.

“The government will look at the implementation of new Group Life Cover, Group Personal Accident Cover and Work Injury Benefits insurance for teachers as part of the medical scheme,” he said.

While addressing the press, his counterpart Akello Misori, the Secretary General KUPPET said that of the 20,000 teachers to be recruited, 2,000 will be posted to Arid and Semi-arid lands.

Misori also echoed that that the commission will convert the 26,000 intern teachers to permanent and pensionable terms come January 2025.

“TSC has agreed to the union’s demand to review the Career Progression Guidelines that have contributed to stagnation among teachers and to develop new career Guidelines through public participation,” he said.

Misori further Expressed contentment with the latest promotion of over 50,000 teachers citing only 14 cases had anomalies.

“The Commission has addressed our concerns about the promotion of teachers not in the payroll and explained the remedy for 14 teachers who earned the promotion while not being in the payroll,” he said.

The Secretary General expressed his displeasure in equal measure over the current staffing in Junior School where only 2 teachers are handling all learning areas in the two grades.

“The Commission will seek an allocation of Sh1 billion for the promotion of 30,000 teachers who have stagnated for years,” he said.

Misori asked teachers who have not received their pension to exercise Patience as the commission was working jointly with the Department of Pensions on the administrative action in order to speed up on the pension processing.
