TSC To Pay Withheld Allowance Arrears For Teachers.

Teachers’ outstanding allowances for withheld allowances will be covered by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), as discussed in a meeting convened by the parliament’s education committee and the TSC. During the session, it was asserted that several teachers who had served in acting capacities for extended periods were due reimbursement for their allowance arrears.

A significant number of educators have worked without pay for extended durations as substitute teachers, including acting deputies, head teachers, and principals, whose compensation remains pending.

Julius Melly, a Tinderet politician who serves as both the chair of the education committee and an MP, highlighted the plight of teachers stuck in the same job category for years. He emphasized the injustice of educators serving in acting roles for over a year and urged prompt resolution of these issues, while also urging the TSC to consider permanent hiring for these positions.

Malulu Injendi, the deputy chairperson of the education committee, questioned why acting allowances were not granted to teachers serving in such capacities and requested a detailed explanation from the TSC regarding the lack of compensation for acting roles.

In response to criticisms, TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia defended the commission, acknowledging the challenges in paying these teachers due to financial constraints. She explained that TSC promotions are typically contingent on budgetary allocations, which have been lacking, making it difficult to promote such teachers.

Dr. Macharia further stated that the commission has been advocating for funds to facilitate promotions but has faced significant budgetary constraints. Nevertheless, the commission has engaged with the salaries and remuneration commission to secure payment of a special duty allowance to compensate teachers currently in acting roles.
