U.S. Embassy Unveils One-Year Fulbright Teaching Assistant Opportunities for Kenyans

With just 11 days left, the US Embassy in Nairobi has announced a special opportunity for Kenyan students to broaden their experiences in the US through the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program.

This program, supported by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), allows Kenyan educators to teach their native language and culture in the US for one academic year. The 2025-2026 Fulbright FLTA Program is open to educators from Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, and five other African countries.

The program’s purpose is to foster intercultural understanding by placing language teaching assistants in American higher education institutions. Its goal is to enhance Americans’ knowledge of foreign languages and cultures by providing exposure to native speakers.

Eligibility and Application Requirements:

Applicants must be Kenyan citizens with the required travel documents and must apply through the Fulbright Commission or the US Embassy in Kenya. Eligibility requirements include:

– Holding an undergraduate degree with a strong academic record (a Master’s degree is an advantage).

– Being an early-career educator or trainee with teaching experience preferred.

– Demonstrating English fluency with recent scores of at least 550 (Paper-Based TOEFL), 79-80 (Internet-Based TOEFL – IBT), or 6.0 (IELTS).

– Showing a genuine interest in teaching their native language and culture to US students.

– Being adaptable, flexible, and capable of working independently and in teams.

Application Process:

Applications must be submitted by September 10 through the Fulbright Commission or the US Embassy. The application portal can be accessed via [apply.iie.org/flta2025]().

Adherence to these requirements is essential for consideration in this competitive program.

Program Benefits and Responsibilities:

Selected participants will spend around 9-10 months in the US, teaching language courses, leading conversation groups, and participating in community events.

They will also have the chance to enhance their professional skills and improve their English through coursework and cultural exchange.

The Fulbright FLTA Program not only enriches the learning experience of American students but also gives Kenyan educators a valuable opportunity for international exposure.
