UDA MPs Calls For TSC Overhaul Over Promotion Bribery

Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku, aligned with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), called for a thorough overhaul of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on Monday, citing corruption as the root cause of the ongoing nationwide teachers’ strike.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, Ruku claimed to have personally witnessed cases of bribery involving his friends and former schoolmates who are now teachers. He stated, “Corruption at the TSC is rampant, especially in matters like teacher promotions.”

Ruku called for radical reforms within the commission, suggesting that teachers often resort to bribery to secure promotions. When asked if he had proof of these claims, the MP affirmed that he did, explaining that his teacher friends had confessed to repeatedly offering bribes in their efforts to advance their careers.

The legislator further exposed the presence of cartels and agents operating within the system. These agents, who do not officially work for TSC, allegedly collect bribes on behalf of individuals within the commission to facilitate promotions.

He elaborated, “There are people who collect money and pass it to others within the system to secure promotions. Some of my friends had to pay bribes of up to Ksh150,000 to be considered for promotions.”

Frustrated with the current situation, Ruku revealed that he had presented a motion in Parliament calling for reforms within the TSC. However, he expressed disappointment that some of the proposed changes were not being implemented by the Ministry of Education.

Angrily, the MP remarked on how disheartening it was for teachers from remote areas to be denied career advancement due to the severe corruption within the commission, noting that many are unable to move up job groups or secure employment.
