|Uncertainty Engulf School Reopening in Various Counties
Thousands of students may not be able to return to school next week due to the aftermath of flooding, which has left many institutions submerged and others struggling with damaged facilities. Some schools are serving as shelters for displaced families, while others have lost vital infrastructure like toilets, exacerbating the crisis.
In regions like Nyanza, Mount Kenya, Rift Valley, and Western Kenya, numerous schools are in dire conditions, with some completely inaccessible due to flooding. For instance, in Nyanza, dozens of schools are either submerged or acting as rescue centers, forcing students to postpone their return to classrooms. The situation is similar in Migori, where several schools remain underwater.
In Rift Valley, flooded pit latrines and inaccessible schools are major concerns, affecting learning institutions across various sub-counties. Efforts are underway to assess damages and find solutions before schools reopen. However, in Nakuru County, flooding continues to pose a threat to schools, with some still submerged and access roads blocked.
Similar challenges are reported in Nyandarua County, where sinking toilets and damaged infrastructure are widespread.

In Nyeri County, sanitation issues caused by flooded pit latrines may prevent thousands of students from resuming classes next week. Parents are urging the government to postpone the reopening to address these concerns. Meanwhile, in Isiolo County, flooding has displaced over a thousand households, including schools and mosques, disrupting normal life in the area.
In Western Kenya, schools in Budalang’i and Teso North constituencies in Busia County are among those severely affected by flooding.
