On Thursday, May 9, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo disclosed that the government had launched initiatives to introduce basic German language courses in the first university, following the Kenya-German Labour Migration Agreement. Tom Mboya University in Homa Bay County will pioneer the German Language Program, aimed at providing Kenyans with a competitive edge when seeking employment opportunities in Germany.
This move is a response to Kenya’s integration into the German Labour System, with Omollo stressing the importance of acquiring German language skills to effectively engage in the new job market. He highlighted that such efforts not only facilitate the export of human resources but also foster a broader diaspora community, thereby enhancing remittances and bolstering Kenya’s economy.
The initiative stems from a bilateral agreement between President William Ruto and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, aiming to offer approximately 250,000 job opportunities to Kenyans. Omollo underscored the significance of equipping Kenyan workers with the necessary language proficiency to access employment opportunities abroad.
During Chancellor Scholz’s State visit to Kenya in May 2023, President Ruto announced Germany’s job offerings for Kenyans and emphasized that language education and training in Germany would bridge the language barrier. The agreement is slated to be officially finalized by June 2024.
Officials from Germany in March expressed optimism about the partnership, envisioning Kenyans filling existing gaps in the transport and caregiving sectors. Apart from promoting German language acquisition, Germany is also providing training to drivers in Western Kenya, particularly in Homa Bay County. Qualified individuals will have the opportunity to work as bus drivers in Germany.
Currently, about 100 Kenyans have been identified to undergo training. Additionally, individuals interested in the healthcare sector are receiving basic medical training before their departure.
